What does it mean? How to use it?

One of my friends asked me about it. I knew this feature existed on Facebook and also knew it was a useless feature.

But then people still use it so I thought sharing this with you all!

• A “poke” is basically someone trying to get your attention
  It’s one of the meaningless features that are used just to annoy someone.

• If you poke someone not in your network and they poke back. You can view their profile even if your not their friend!

• A poke is when you allow someone to see your facebook page for 3 days, so they can know who you are and hopefully add you as a friend.

The poke feature is intended to be a “nudge” to attract the attention of another user. Many facebook users use this feature to attract attention or say “hello” to their friends. It can also be interpreted as flirting. A previous version of Facebook’s FAQ gave additional insight into the origin of the feature, stating: “When we created the poke, we thought it would be cool to have a feature without any specific purpose. People interpret the poke in many different ways, and we encourage you to come up with your own meanings.”
