Steps To Install WordPress

There are thousands of people searching for the keyword “How To Install WordPress” online every month on Google. So you can understand the popularity of the WordPress that it has throughout the Internet. Everyday hundreds of personal blogs are setup using WordPress.

Install WordPress

You can find out why you should choose WordPress.

This small tutorial on NPXP will help you install WordPress with ease. Frankly there is nothing much into it and is very easy if you are eager to have your own self hosted WordPress blog.

This WordPress tutorial is good to go with any of the web hosting servers, where Cpanel and FTP are provided as part of the hosting package.  If you are yet to choose a reliable hosting company then I recommend you to go with Hostgator using my referral link to avail the best offers. It is one of the Best Hosting Company on the web and it is very reliable. I have been with them for over a year now and there have been less than 3 downtime which were fixed within an hour.

Once you have signed up with Hostgator or any other hosting providers you would receive an email. It will contain the login information for your Cpanel and FTP. If you are ready with it then let’s begin.

8 Easy Steps To Install WordPress

Step1:

Go to WordPress/ and download the latest version of the blogging software to your desktop and extract the files using WinZip or similar extracting software.

Step 2:

You can use Filezilla or similar FTP software to get access to your hosting account to dump the WordPress files. Insert all the information provided by your hosting company into the FTP software. Such as, Username, Password and the ftp address to your site. Usually it would be in this format:

ftp://YourSite.com

Username: abc123

Password: abc123

You should get access to your account if the login credential is correct.

Step 3:

You will see many folders inside the Filezilla window. The next step is to double click on the “public_html” folder and dump the extracted WordPress files into it. It will take some time before it is completely uploaded onto the server.

public_html

NOTE: You can dump all the WordPress files inside the extracted folder to public_html if you want your blog to appear as http://YourSite.com.

But if you want it to be something like http://YourSite.com/blog then you would have to create a folder “blog” in the public_html and then dump all the WordPress files into it.

Step 4:

Once the WordPress files are inside the public_html folder you need to edit one of the php files in it.

The file that you need to edit is “wp-config-sample.php” you should rename it to “wp-config.php” and then open the file to make few changes inside.

Rename wp-config File

Step 5:

In order to obtain the data that has to be changed inside the wp-config.php file you should now login to the Cpanel.

cpanel logo

Once you are logged into it you need to scroll down a bit till you find the option “Mysql Databases”.

MYSQL cpanel

Click on it and you should be in a new page. This is where we will create a database and assign a user to it for the purpose of WordPress installation.

Under the “Create New Database” enter something which is a combination of letters and numbers for security purpose. And then click on “Create Database

This would create the database. Click on “Go Back”.

Scroll down a little and you should be able to see “Mysql Users” and under that “Add New User”, type in a username of your choice and use the password generator for your safety.

create mysql user

Then click on “Create User” and you should see something like this:

Added user xyz123 with the password GTIVi;gTFuBc

Copy the Password to a notepad because it is very important.

Click on “Go Back” and you should be in the same page as you were before. Scroll to the bottom and you should see “Add User To Database”, the dropdown should have the User and the database that you have created.

add user

Both the details should be exactly to what you have created earlier, if it is then click on “Add”. In the next page you would need to “Manage User Privileges”, click on “All Privileges” and then click “Make Changes”.

privilege permissions

In the next screen you will see something similar to this:

“User something_xyz123 was added to the database something _xyz123“. Copy the User and database names into a notepad. This is a very useful piece of information as the password which we created earlier.

That’s it, the job is done inside the Cpanel.

:)

Step 6:

You can close the cpanel now and come back to the wp-config.php file in the ftp software which is already opened by you. The file is commented (detailed) so that you can change the variables easily without any problem.

Edit wp-config.php file

Find out the following information by looking at the file or by just using the search function (Ctrl + F).

Just search for “DB_NAME” and you will find this “putyourdbnamehere” next to it. Replace that with the Database name that you have created earlier.

After you are done with that you will notice below the “‘usernamehere” field. Replace that with the Database Username.

Same holds good for the “yourpasswordhere” field which is below to it. Replace it with the Database Password which you have made a note of earlier.

You are almost Done!

Step 7: (Optional)

This step can be performed if you need additional security for your blog. In the wp-config.php file search for “table_prefix”. By default the value next to it would be: ‘wp_‘.   Change the wp_ to something else. It is your choice; you can just use letters and numbers like djeu74_ instead of the default ‘wp_’.

You can now close the wp-config.php file and leave it in the public_html folder.

table prefix

Step 8:

Open Firefox or the Internet Explorer browser and type your website address in it.

You should see the WordPress Welcome screen. Type the Blog title and the Email. Blog title can be anything descriptive about your blog. Email is important because the login information is sent to it.

Make sure you select “Allow my blog to appear in search engines like Google and Technorati”

And the click on “Install WordPress

welcome wordpress

You are done. It will give you the username and password for your blog. Copy the info and use it in the next screen to login.

Finally you are done installing the world’s most famous blogging software “WordPress”.
