Once you are done with the WordPress installation the first thing you should be doing is to “Change the password” to something else by clicking on “Your Profile“. The password which is generated within the installation is just too good for anyone to memorize it. So your best bet is to change it to something memorable and secure as well.
Change Password:
You can change the password after clicking on “Your Profile” and scroll down to the bottom and update the password. Check out the picture below.
Permalink Structure:
After changing the password the next step is to make sure that the Permalink Structure is changed to something nicer from the default:
http://something.com/?p=123
WordPress considers the above form of URL structure as ugly, for the obvious reasons. You can checkout my next upcoming posts to find out what best suits your needs. In any case you can leave the permalink structure the way it is if you are not much concerned about it, but I highly recommend you to change it to something better.
General Settings:
Ensure that the Blog title and Tagline is something nice and related to your blog. These are the information which users and search engines read first as soon as they enter your blog.
“Email address” can be changed if you wish it to be something different. This would be the point of contact between you and the blog.
“Membership” is unchecked by default. If you want user participation in any form this has to be selected. This option can be useful in order to reduce spam comments to zero.
“New User Role” should always be Subscriber until and unless you wish add other users to write articles or probably administer your blog for various reasons. This can include approving comments, change WordPress theme, plugin or something similar. Be sure to give power to do that to someone who is close to you and whom you trust to the core. Nobody likes to gamble with their personal stuff, so if your blog is dear to you then be careful.
“Time zone” would be an important factor if you are specific about the time and the date posts are made. It is very vital when you schedule your posts for a later date or time.
“Time and Date Format” is more of a preference about how it should be displayed on your blog. I usually let it be the way it is, which is default.
Week starts on Monday for me and many others I guess, I do not really see an implication of this option. But for few people this can matter a lot maybe.
WordPress has got various options and settings to cater the needs of different people from different backgrounds. It is one of the main reasons why people choose WordPress as the best Blogging Platform.
