Media Settings:

This section of the WordPress focuses on the images that you would be uploading onto your server while posting articles.

Thumbnail size i.e. width and height is at 150×150. Thumbnails are proportional or else the output is all ugly and stuff. Medium and Large size depends on your blogs theme. So keep it small if your theme has less width area.

Embeds:

Auto Embeds helps you:

Attempt to automatically embed all plain text URLs

Which simply means when you post a url from the below sites the non-hyperlinked url will turn into a respective embed i.e. video or a picture.

Privacy Settings:

Blog visibility simply means if you want your blog to be indexed by Search Engines or not.I would like my blog to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers

Until and unless you don’t want your top secret blog to be known by anyone else use it

Permalinks:

The Permanent URL’s for a particular blog can be defined the way it appears in WordPress. This is how someone would type in the address bar of an Internet browser and access to a certain page of your blog. This can rarely be a problem because very few would follow that method to access a page.

Permalinks are most importantly useful to rank well in the Search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing.

In order to change the way the permalink appears you can make changes in this section. You can use the predefined url Permalink structures on this page. Or even better go for the Custom Structure.

As you can see I have been using “/%postname%” custom url structure. The reason is simple because I want my NPXP’s url’s small and pretty, to the point as well.

I will blog about permalink structures in-detail in the coming few days.

These are some of the variables you can use in combination to get a new permalink structure of your own:

%year%  %monthnum%  %day%  %hour% %minute% %second% %postname% %post_id% %category% %author%

Optional:

The Category Base and Tag Base are optional because they are rarely used. But all you need to understand is if you add anything in the empty box, the word appears before the category name or the tag name in the permalink.

Miscellaneous Settings:

Basically it would let you change settings where the images or files uploaded goes into the server. Apart from that if and only you change the upload folder then you have to specify the exact path to the new uploads folder.

Use this “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” if you are specific about what is uploaded at what time.

Track Links’ Update Times

It is used to update a centralized system about the changes in the link on your blog. Never tried it myself so don’t have much of input.
