If you are thinking about starting your own blog, some of the most important work must occur before you even begin writing. The first step to creating a successful blog, and possibly the most crucial step, is to find the right niche. You may have heard this before, but perhaps you are unsure of how to go about this process. Here are 6 key considerations to get you started.

- What’s Your Interest Level? Perhaps the most important aspect of creating a successful blog is to find a topic in which you have a natural interest. You might be thinking that you’d rather find a niche in which you can make the most money. The problem with focusing solely on money is that you will soon find that you run out of things to say. If you have a natural interest or passion for a subject, it will be much easier to consistently generate content for your blog. This is the only way to gather a loyal following and eventually a loyal customer base.
- What’s the Popularity? Although it’s important to find a topic that you’re interested in, it’s crucial that other people are interested in it as well. Perhaps you have a passion for learning about the diet of African wildebeests. This is great, but it is unlikely that very many people will want to learn every single detail about their diet the way you do. A great way to gauge the popularity of a topic is to use the Google Keyword Tool. If a fair amount of people are searching for your topic each month, then you will know that there is some interest in it.
- Can You Monetize it? It’s possible that you don’t care about this at all. Perhaps your blogging goals focus on networking and meeting other like-minded people. However, if you are hoping to make some money with your blog, then this is an important consideration. You should think about what companies or products you might be able to advertise or promote on your site. Put yourself in your users’ shoes when they type in a search term that would pull up your site. Are they looking for entertainment? Are they looking for information? Or are they looking to buy something? If you are in a niche that naturally caters to people in “buying mode”, then you will have a much higher probability of monetary success.
- Scope the Competition Another thing you want to consider when choosing your niche is the strength of your competition. If there are already a couple big players in your niche with a fiercely loyal following, you may find it difficult to woo their users to your site. On the other hand, a lot of competition in a niche can be a good indication that it is a profitable niche. If you can differentiate yourself from the competition and think of them as potential partners rather than competitors, then you may be able to do quite well.
- Narrow Your Focus “Vegetables and fruits are the natural products of health and these can be taken in plenty of quantity and these are very good for health. As long you as you stay healthy, there is no need for you to work on losing weight but you need to have good diet. big mistake many new bloggers make is that they are afraid to narrow their niche. They fear that if they go too narrow, they will alienate a large portion of their potential readers. It’s counter-intuitive to realize that the more narrow your focus, the more you will really speak to a specific audience, and the more successful your blog will be. The Internet is heading in the direction of more specific, not broader, niches.
- The Future If you want to start a blog that lasts for the long term, you should think about whether your topic will still be relevant – and even better, growing – 10 or 20 years in the future. You might want to start a wordpress blog about Twitter. That is a good idea, but are you certain that Twitter will still be relevant in 10 years? Maybe it will, no one knows. But in the past we have seen many social networking sites rise and fall in popularity. Many blogs dedicated to MySpace are now struggling.
Choosing your blog’s niche is probably the most important decision you will make, so you should spend a lot of time on it. Brainstorm a list of all the possibilities, and then consider each one from the point of view of these 6 considerations.
